New Publication from OFSP Steering Committee Member Denis Lairon and Colleagues

We are pleased to highlight a new open-access article published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, co-authored by OFSP Steering Committee member Dr. Denis Lairon, together with colleagues.

Title: Association between dietary environmental pressures and major chronic diseases: assessment from the prospective NutriNet-Santé cohort

This study examines how the environmental pressures of our diets, such as greenhouse gas emissions, land use, energy demand, water use, biodiversity impact, and pesticide treatment frequency relate to the risk of major chronic diseases. Drawing on data from 34,077 participants in the NutriNet-Santé cohort, the authors found that diets with lower environmental impacts are consistently associated with reduced risks of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes, reinforcing the strong co-benefits between sustainable dietary patterns and human health.

The paper offers valuable evidence supporting the shift toward more plant-forward, environmentally sustainable food systems, an approach strongly aligned with OFSP’s mission.
